In Celebration of

Robert Humble

December 5, 1954 -  July 14, 2017

Robert Clifford Humble was born 5 December 1954 in London England and subsequently baptized at St Georges Chapel at the Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham. Robert is survived by the love of his life, Heather Bell. Loving father of Arwen (Mac), Linnet, Elspeth, Meade and Rowan. Loving stepfather to Stephanie (Curtis) and Lindsey (Ethan). Loving grandfather of Bronwen, Atticus, Theodan and Declan.
Robert was ordained as a United Church Minister in 1981. He served in the Canadian Forces Chaplain Branch for 28 years. Robert retired as a Commander having served in several command positions. Robert was selected to be the first Canadian exchange officer at US Naval Air Station Oceania, Virginia Beach, USA.
As a Fleet Chaplain Robert sailed in many ships of the Pacific Fleet. HMC Ships Saskatchewan, Qu’Appelle, Yukon, Mackenzie, Gatineau, Kootenay, Restigouche, Terra Nova and Provider. Robert also deployed aboard the US Navy Aircraft Carrier USS George Washington.
After retirement from the CF, Robert returned to civilian ministry and became the Minister of Warren and Meadow Lea Churches in Manitoba from 2012 to 2015. Robert and his wife Heather moved to Merrickville Ontario in 2015 where Robert became the Minister of Merrickville United Church. Shortly after this Robert was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Brain Tumor which changed the plan completely.
Thank you to all our family and friends who supported us during these difficult times; the village of Merrickville, Beth Donovan Hospice and volunteers, and our family doctor, Dr. Mooney. Thanks to all the PSWs for their help in enabling Robert to stay at home where he wanted to be with his wife Heather.
This quote from John Maxwell is fitting for Robert: “our ability as leaders will not be measured by the buildings we built, the institutions we establish, or what our team accomplished during our tenure. You and I will be judged by how well the people we invested in carried on after we are gone”. Only in heaven will he truly know the extent of his ministry and number of lives he inspired. Robert will be missed deeply.

Heather and family,
On behalf of all of us at the Montreal & Ottawa Conference Office of the United Church of Canada, I offer my deepest condolences at this sad time. Over the years, Robert served his church, his community and his country well. Please know that you and your extended family are being held in our prayers.

I had the absolute pleasure of knowing Robert for close to three decades. I can remember the first time I met Robert. He had just recently entered the Regular Force - I was so impressed with him that I can remember thinking - where can we find more clergy like this to recruit.
I admired his operational focus and his rapport with the troops. His love was the Navy but he was a stellar chaplain in all three elements.
He was a brilliant preacher and he was compassionate and gifted in his pastoral care. He was approachable regardless of rank. Whether simply seeking a sounding board or sound advice - Robert was your chaplain. While being a man for all seasons may be beyond anyone's abilities - Robert could give a pretty good shot.
I consider myself blessed to have known him and to have ministered along side of him in various capacities.
