In Celebration of

Michael John Hartley Castell, DVM

April 9, 1933 -  March 5, 2019

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Michael Castell. He was a well-loved husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind his darling wife Catharine (Kay), his four children, Claire (Clint), Rob (Juliann), Eve (Phil), and Lucy (Guy) as well as his grandchildren, Sydney, Dylan, Jackson, Summer, Levi, and Sky.
Michael was born in London, England in 1933. The strongest memories of his youth were playing amongst the rubble from the London Blitz with friends. He also always had a strong interest in wildlife and nature which led him to a career in veterinary medicine. He began his life as a farm veterinarian in Penzance, England followed by an exciting 15 months in Central Africa where Claire was born. Michael, Kay, and Claire returned to Windsor, England for a brief time where Rob was born and then emigrated to Canada. First stop was Edmonton, Alberta where Eve was born and then a permanent move to Ottawa, Ontario where Lucy was born and Michael co-founded the Blair Animal Hospital.
Michael had a lengthy and successful career. He was a highly trusted and respected veterinarian for many animals and their owners across Ottawa. His colleagues and staff also admired him for his professional and compassionate manner.
In his spare time, Michael loved to hike, travel with his family, read, garden, and enjoy a good scotch at the end of a long day. He also had a thirst for knowledge and was always more than eager to share his wisdom when asked. This came easy to him as it was just a small part of his generous and giving nature.
Michael’s family would like to thank the staff at the Garry J. Armstong Longterm Care Home, particularly the 2nd Floor, for their support, kindness, and dignified care of Michael during his stay there.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 5, 2019 at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave., Ottawa from 5:00 pm - 8:00 p.m. We invite all family and friends to attend and share their wonderful memories of Michael with us.
