In Celebration of

Michael Ennis

March 23, 2018

Michael Ennis died suddenly in Ottawa on March 23, 2018, at age 76, with his beloved wife Joanne and family by his bedside. The centre of his universe was his family and his love for his daughters Lisa Ennis, Sheryl (Siddiqui), their husbands Michael Rutherford and Nadir Siddiqui, and amazing grandchildren, Arman, Adam and Aria. Last October, Michael and Joanne proudly celebrated their wedding anniversary marking 50 years.
Born and raised in Sudbury Ontario, he was the 2nd eldest of five children. He is lovingly remembered by his sister Cathy Tihanyi (Jeno), and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Sheila Mary (Glenn) and brothers Terry (Rosalind) and Peter (Gail).
Michael’s career began in Sudbury as a Protection and Child Care Worker and culminated with his appointment as Assistant Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Health, where he retired in 1995. From start to finish, he touched many lives with his kindness, good judgement and dedication to clients and staff. Michael’s commitment to the public sector and people of Ontario did not end upon retirement as he proceeded to volunteer tirelessly as Board Chair of West Park Healthcare Centre, Champlain Community Care Access Centre, the Ontario Association of CCACs, and had recently joined the Board of Youturn. Those that had the pleasure of working alongside Michael will forever remember his ability to lead a team through calm or storm, and come out with a heartwarming smile every time.
Michael loved nature: gardening, rock collecting, fishing and travelling. We will remember Michael for his unfailing sense of humour and ability to provoke a laugh (or groan) when he appeared wearing a silly hat chosen from his special collection.
Friends and Family are invited to visit at Beechwood, Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, from 1 o’clock on, May 5, 2018, until the time of the Celebration of Michael’s Life at 2 o’clock.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael’s memory may be made to the Ottawa Heart Institute, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of choice

It was such a privilege working with Michael on the OACCAC Board. His unwavering leadership, patience and sense of humor was ever present even during the most challenging times. My thoughts are with his family.

Mike was the Regional Director of the Central Region of the Ministry of Community and Social Services when I moved to Queen's Park in 1980. I became a Manager in the Toronto Area Office under his leadership. He was a sincere, down to earth person who showed us all that the greatest strength of a leader was the ability to treat those in the workforce with respect and honesty. His actions spoke as loud as his words. He was a great leader, teacher and human. To say he will be missed is an understatement.

It is with a very heavy heart I say goodbye to my previous boss, mentor and a special friend. I worked for Michael in the early 70s,soon after I came to Canada. I owe my whole career with the Provincial Goverment to Michael. He made me feel valued, and encouraged me to bring out my potential.
Michael was a leader ,well respected, kind, funny and a great human being. He made the world a better place not only for me but all that crossed his path.
My husband and I are very fortunate to have a personal relationship with Michael and Joanne though the years until now.

Michael will always have a special place in my heart and I thank God he was in my life.
Joanne and family, our hearts and prayers are with you.
