In Celebration of

Daniel Georges Marc Baudouin

On July 11, 2018, Daniel Georges Marc Baudouin (Marc) passed away peacefully in his sleep at his summer residence, Ayvalik /Turkey, surrounded by olive trees, fruit orchards, and the Aegean Sea. He was 88.

He was born on January 26, 1930 in Montreal, Canada, to Annette and Oscar Baudouin. A brilliant student and an avid hockey player at Le Collège Stanislas de Montréal et Québec, he continued his studies at McGill University Faculty of Law, graduating at the age of 19. Not permitted to write his bar exams because he was too young, he decided to obtain his PhD at the University of Paris.

Opting for a life of adventure, travel and of service to Canada, Marc joined the department of Foreign Affairs. His first assignment was to Viet Nam in the run up to the 1963 war. He subsequently served in Brussels and Paris and was then appointed in 1968 as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Zaire (now Democratic Republic of Congo), accredited to Rwanda, and Burundi, the youngest Canadian Ambassador to date. He was the first resident Ambassador to Morocco when a Canadian Embassy was established there in 1974, and then served as Ambassador to Turkey from 1980 to 1983. After his retirement in 1993, he worked many more years dedicating himself to the foreign service in Ottawa and lecturing at various universities in Turkey.

Marc is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Fatma Engin (Fatoş); his children Daphne, Nicolas, Emmanuelle, and Alexandre; his step son Emre Ozaltin and his six grandchildren Alexia, Oscar, Alma, Gabriel, Osman Phoenix, and Emir Troy. Marc was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Luc and Fernand Baudouin.

Marc was kind, compassionate, principled, with a great sense of humor. He was an intellectual, a bon vivant, a gourmet, and a romantic at heart. A voracious reader and prolific writer, he enjoyed travelling and spending summers in his homes in North Cyprus and Turkey.

A Celebration of Marc's life will be held at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery & Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, on Friday, November 23, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:30 PM with Words of Remembrance to commence at 4:15PM.

Marc Baudouin was my first Head of Mission, when I was posted to Morocco in 1975. He was indeed a kind and compassionate man with all his staff, to the point of using his personal funds to bail out an employee who got into financial difficulties. He was fondly remembered in the mission for many years, as long as those who worked with him were still employed there. I will certainly not forget his support for me on my first posting, and offer my sympathy and condolences to Fatoş and all his family and friends.
