Principal – Advanced Engine Technology Ltd. (AET)
Passed away at the Queensway Carleton Hospital on Tuesday February 5, 2019 at the age of 73. Beloved husband of Heather (née Pope) and loving father to Charles and Colin. Dear brother to Linda and Brenda and fond brother-in-law of Fiona (Peter Barrow), Barbara Richardson, Richard (Nancy) and Rosemary. Gary will be dearly remembered by cousins James Brown (Joan) and Phillip Brown (Monica) as well as many nieces and nephews. He will also be deeply missed by AET friends and colleagues.

Gary studied Mechanical Technology at EOIT/Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology and went on to the University of Ottawa to obtain his BASc and his MASc in Mechanical Engineering; he was also a PhD candidate at the University of Ottawa from 1975 - 1977. His love of research and engine technology led him to a professional career as a defence research scientist at National Defence/DREO in the 1970s and as a Senior Research Officer for National Research Council (NRC). In 1989, he founded AET, where he has researched and developed new technologies and products in the areas of advanced engine technologies, combustion systems and fuels related technologies for the last 29 years. Gary was first and foremost a thinker, a researcher and a designer and is the holder of many patents in these areas.

Major accomplishments at AET have included research and development of a small ultra-light portable diesel engine/generator and research, development and commercialization of the Ignition Quality Tester (IQT™), originally developed by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio TX. The IQT™ is an instrument that precisely measures the ignition quality of diesel fuel for application in the petroleum and related industries. He was joined in his lifelong passion for technology development and commercialization by his loving partner, Heather and they spent their lives together, pursuing their dreams in this unique field, with the help of the talented staff at AET.

Born and raised in Kingston, Ontario, he moved to Ottawa in 1967. He married his cherished sweetheart, Heather, in 1968 and celebrated 50 years of a wonderful marriage on August 17, 2018 in Montreal. He loved playing hockey with a passion, playing 4 times a week with various hockey teams. He especially enjoyed playing hockey with his sons Charles and Colin. Gary also loved life on the water, enjoying dock work, boating and swimming. He also loved to spend time with his precious Zia and enjoyed BBQing, eating fish, enjoying wine with The Wine Group, listening to music and going to the NAC orchestra and theatre.

Sincere thanks to all of his health care givers for his excellent care, including his GP, Dr. Darren Whatley, staff of the Ottawa General Hospital, oncologist Dr. Isabelle Bence-Bruckler, hematology resident Dr. Russell Sterrett, as well as staff at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, ICU Dr. Craig Reid, ICU Dr. Akshai Iyengar, Dr. Ali and nursing staff, ICU nurse Marina Walcer, as well as many others, including nurse trainee Merri.

Friends are invited to visit the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave. on Saturday March 2, 2019 after 12:30p.m. Memorial Service will be held in the Sacred Space at 2 p.m. followed by a reception.
