In Celebration of

Ethel Aubrey Gilchrist

February 20, 1921 -  August 4, 2017

Ethel passed away peacefully at home early on August 4, holding the hands of family members. Aware of and concerned for those around her, she maintained her cheerfulness and wit to the end. Predeceased by Varge, her loving husband of 72 years, and two sons, Brent and Hallam. Survived by four sons and a daughter, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a beloved brother, Larry Newel. Born in Calgary, Alberta, child of a large Irish immigrant family, she made a host of friends during her lifetime, and maintained her ties with them. Her home and her table were always open to newcomers and to the friends of her children. She leaves a legacy of laughter to those who remain behind, and she left this world anticipating a joyous reunion with the husband, sons, siblings, and friends who have gone before.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday August 12, 2:00 p.m at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints, 1017 Prince of Wales Drive in Ottawa, Ontario

My mother embraced life in all its facets with a resolution to celebrate each day and especially those days when she was able to go shopping. My wife Irene and myself came to Ottawa on Friday July 29th to visit Ethel and provide her daughter-in law Joanne Gilchrist with an opportunity to vacation with a number of her children and grand children. There were mandatory shopping excursions planned but alas her health would not permit.
Through out my life I have been interested in the lives of people who have had "near death experiences". In the days preceding her death I promised her that passing and the reunion with loved ones would be a thousand time better than shopping.
I knew she was ready when she agreed with me and now, I can almost hear her laughter from the heavens.

No written words can really do our Nana justice. She was one of a kind and will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of getting to know her. What a reunion they must be having above!

With love from Calgary

It was indeed a very special privilege to spend this last week with my second mom. As she expressed a special bond was shared as I learned how to serve her as best I could. Until we see each other again dearest mom my love for you has increased immensely. I'm so happy that you are reunited with your sweetheart and your 2 sons. What a special reunion that must have been. Love for forever and always.

What a lady she was. She will be missed dearly no doubt about that. My sincere condolences to the family and friends.
