Alex passed away peacefully on March 21, 2019 after a short illness. Born in Clydebank, Scotland, Alex attended the School of Architecture, University of Strathclyde. He completed three and a half years’ service with the Royal Navy, and completed a course in Architecture, graduating with a B.Arch. in 1952 (Gold Medal). Alex completed a post-graduate course in Landscape Architecture at University College, London (1953–55). Following five years’ architectural practice in London, UK, he immigrated to Canada in 1957. Alex was one of the founders of Schoeler and Heaton Architects, designing notable Ottawa area buildings such as the Public Service Alliance of Canada Building, École secondaire Charlebois, the Canadian Labour Congress Building, Embassy of Cuba, and notably collaborated on the Katimavik Pavilion at Expo ‘67 in Montreal.

Alex is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Agnes/Nancy, daughters Caroline and Erica (David Townson); grandchildren Simon and Adam Heaton, and Matthew and Alex Townson.
Predeceased by his son, Geoffrey (Robyn).

Friends and family may pay their respects at Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa, on Saturday, March 30th from 2- 3pm, followed by a funeral service and reception. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Royal Canadian Geographical Society in memory of Alex.
