Thank you, Tom, for the fond memories, and for giving me one last chance to see and spend time with you. Rest now, where pain does not exist. Be at peace now, where trivialities don't matter. Be among those, who can only look upon and guide us. My prayers are with Johanne, Annie and Mikey. May they find comfort in the thought that you lived your life well and touched lives in ways that may not even be visible to the eyes. Development work had been meaningful because of people like you. I will sorely miss your humor, the kindness and quiet gentleness that you always wore on your sleeves.

Rest now, my friend. Thank you for the beautiful memories you shared with us here in Manila.

I recall that when Tom left Manila after his stint of duty in 2008, we in the section all wrote notes of appreciation. I am glad I let him know at that time how he had become a friend to us all. I thanked him then for having been our very warm and approachable boss, never intimidating; confident in sharing spaces for decision-making that allows people to gain confidence themselves and grow in taking more responsibility; a mentor in times of conflict, understanding to all concerned; jolly; and sensitive to Filipino ways in an endearing and respectful way. To Johanne and family, my deepest condolences.
