In Celebration of

Stuart Douglas "Jim" Gunn

STUART DOUGLAS "JIM" GUNN
Corporal (Retired) - Royal Canadian Regiment
KOREAN WAR VETERAN

After a prolonged illness, on June 19, 2017 in his 83rd year, Jim passed away peacefully at the Gatineau Hospital.
Born on September 9, 1934 in Toronto, Ontario, Jim was predeceased by the love of his life, his beloved wife, Agnes Francine Courchesne, who departed him just a few short months ago, on December 18, 2016.
Jim is survived by his two devoted and saddened daughters, Linda March (Brian) of Bradford, Ontario and Karen Canning (Michael) of Oakville, Ontario.
He is also survived and will be terribly missed by his five loving grandchildren, Kyle, Trevor, Kelsie, Blake and Paige.
His lifelong partner in adventure, best friend and brother, Donald James Gunn (Barbara) will find Jim’s loss irreplaceable. Jim also leaves his Sister, Margaret Walker and was predeceased by his brother, Bill Gunn.

Jim was an active member of the Ottawa Branch of The Royal Canadian Regiment Association and Unit 9 of the Korea Veterans Association, having served with both 1 and 3 RCR in Korea, and later in Germany. This included being a sniper with 3 RCR during the Battle of Hill 187 (2-3 May 1953), the Canadian Army’s bloodiest and most hard-fought engagement of the Korean War, which saw 25 Royal Canadians killed in action, 26 wounded and 7 made prisoners, Jim among them. Jim spent 4 months as a “guest” of the Chinese Army, being released at the Armistice. Jim remained in The RCR for another 10 years, was promoted Corporal, and trained as a paratrooper. Following his military service, Jim became a very successful business man, involved in the manufacture and sales of hockey pucks, a unique domain of surprising complexity, as Jim could relate. Jim was, indeed, a true soldier, great all round Canadian and wonderful comrade. He will be missed.

Friends are invited to gather at the Hall of Colours of Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa, Monday June 26 after 10 a.m. Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. at the National Military Cemetery, followed by a reception.

In memoriam donations to The Last Post Fund would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

My Dear Jim, I will miss your kindness, your incredible sense of humour, your great generosity. You have been a devoted step father, always there to support and guide us. I cannot thank you enough for the love and support you gave our mother during your entire time together. You truly understood these vows "through good and bad times and through health and sickness". I will carry you in my heart for ever. Love you! Frankie
