In Celebration of

Rowena Mary Vesey Pomeroy (née Holt)

October 12, 1920 -  May 5, 2017

Loving wife of the late Arthur Pomeroy (Cmdr., R.N.V.R. -ret.) and mother of the late Hugh. In her 97th year. She leaves behind her son John, daughter-in-law Lee Anne, her two grandchildren, Carrington (Cary) and Alexandra (Lexi), whom she adored, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Staying on her beloved farm in Cantley, QC until she was 95, and until quite recently, still driving and getting the occasional speeding ticket, Grandma Tractor (nickname given by the grandchildren because of her insistence on cutting the lawns herself on her big red tractor until the age of 94) was an inspiration to all who met her. She was never one to withhold an opinion if she felt someone was not doing something “just so”; and, right up until the end, her quick and dry sense of humour would still shock and awe.

Rowena was a “Navy Brat” who travelled to postings with her family (father being a Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy) to such places as Singapore, China, Indonesia and Bermuda, among others. She served with the Women’s Royal Naval Service (Wrens) during World War II as a Plotting Officer. After the war, she worked in France and then England where she met Arthur. They married and moved to Canada in 1962, first to Ottawa, Ontario then to Cantley in 1966 where she would spend her next 50 years caring for her family and several cats and dogs, cooking gallons of marmalade, fussing over acres of flowers, raspberries and vegetables, enjoying afternoon tea and the occasional gin and tonic (with lemon!). She also led an incredibly busy life of charity work, contributing endless hours to the I.O.D.E. of which she was a member for over 50 years, driving for Meals on Wheels for almost 40 years, and helping with the Gatineau Valley Gardeners.

Many thanks to the Cohens, the “River Road Crew”, Jeanette, Renee, Pam, Phyliss, Mary, Muriel and all of her many friends for their love, support and kindness during her days at the Farm and for their many visits to see her after she made “The Big Move” to her residence in Ottawa.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Sacred Space at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. Friends and family are invited to visit from 9 a.m. until time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Rowena’s two favourite charities would be appreciated: The Ottawa Mission and the Ottawa Humane Society.

We will remember Rowena as an energetic soul who worked tirelessly to host the Cantley community at her beautiful farm which she maintained so effectively. We remember the outdoor bonfires in the fall and the New Years parties where we all made new friends.
