In Celebration of

Norman Schwartz

October 6, 1933 -  March 24, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear husband, cherished father, and beloved Opa. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Gerda (nee Meyer), his daughters, Catherine (Rafael) and Sandra (Chris), and his grandchildren, Liam, Mateo, Marcos, and Erika. Norm passed away suddenly, but painlessly at home with Mom, in her loving arms right to the end. Although he had been dealing with a slow decline for several years with Alzheimer's, and many of his memories had faded, he still knew all of us by name and would sing, laugh and smile whenever we were together. Norm was a loyal, proud and dedicated husband, father, and Opa who adored his family and was equally adored by them. The family will receive relatives and friends at Beechwood Funeral, Cemetery & Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Ave, Sunday April 2, 2017 from 10 a.m. A celebration of his life and reception will follow at 11am. For those wishing, memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County would be appreciated.

Remember Me
To the living, I am gone.
To the sorrowful, I will never return.
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I have never left.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore, gazing at a beautiful sea – remember me.
As you look in awe at a mighty forest and its grand majesty – remember me.
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity – remember me.
Remember me in your heart, your thoughts, your memories of the times we loved,
the times we cried, the times we fought, the times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never be gone.
- Margaret Mead

Although I have not been a member of the Camera Club of Ottawa since moving to Oakville almost nine years ago, I thought of Norm recently when I was trying to photograph some abstracts of objects reflected in Mylar. This was a technique Norm used often to produce lovely images. I was not nearly as successful as he was; he was a master. Condolences to Gerda and the family.

Dear Gerda, Catherine and Sandra (and families) - I've just been a little blown away reading about Norm's passing just now. That is very sad news! I've got many many fond memories of him from all those years ago staying with you in Ottawa and from our more recent visit. My favourite times with Norm were the hours spent wandering through woods with him and watching how he went about capturing such beautiful photographs. I never managed to pick up much of his technical know-how (despite his best efforts to explain) but he certainly got me looking at everything with a much keener eye than I ever did before and I still ALWAYS think of him when I come upon especially colourful autumn leaves...and icicles!
All my thoughts, sympathy and best wishes to all of you.
With love,
Wendy
