In Celebration of

Meredith Westlake

September 9, 1946 -  October 16, 2017

WESTLAKE (Knowles) Meredith Tilton

It is with love and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Meredith Westlake on October 16, 2017, after a rapid cancer journey. Meredith was the loving wife of John Westlake, and proud mother of Scott (Marisa) of Ottawa, ON and Craig (Nicole) of Canmore, AB. Meredith received endless joy watching her grandchildren grow. Emma and Keira were her sleep over buddies, and Aidan and Owen always loved their activities with grandma.
Born in Saint John NB on September 9, 1946, daughter of the late Murray Knowles and Josephine Knowles (Tilton) she spent most of her childhood in Yarmouth NS. Meredith was determined from an early age to be a nurse. She was part of the Centennial Year Graduating Class of the IWK Hospital for Children in Halifax. Meredith married John in 1970 and began their family. Naval life kept them in Halifax and Ottawa aside from a three-year posting in the United Kingdom in the early 1980s.
Meredith has always been a caregiver and a people person. Whether it was her own parents in later years, friend’s parents or anyone she knew, she always wanted to help. The outpouring of concern and compassion she received on her own cancer journey showed just how much she meant to so many. She had many close groups of friends – her nursing buddies, Craft groups in Halifax and Ottawa, Curves buddies, Tim Horton’s buddies and Orleans United Church buddies, not to mention their tight knit group of Navy friends.
Meredith is also survived by her brother Stephen (Christine) of Gatineau; cousins Cindy Knowles, Allison Capson (Janet), Bruce Ward (Susan), Philip and Richard and their families; brothers-in-law, Dennis (Vicki) and Steven (Jana), and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue (East of Vanier Parkway), on Tuesday October 24 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday October 25 at 10 am in the Sacred Space of Beechwood. In Lieu of flowers the next time you’re at Tim Horton’s please buy a stranger a coffee and make a new friend in Meredith’s honour.
“Guess who the only person wearing her name tag seven days into the cruise was? Guess who the last person that needed a name tag was?” (a very dear friend of Meredith)

Meredith was always the life of our family picnics and gatherings. She knew us all well and was able to visit with each of us before our event concluded. She had a joyful spirit which will be missed by all her family and friends.

John, Stephen and Families:
We are very sorry for your loss. Although, we did not see Meredith very often we enjoyed our phone conversations and emails. She kept us up to date on the family news. She always began her phone conversation with a friendly "hello cousin". We will miss her, as we know all of you will.

So saddened and sorry to hear of Merediths passing. She had a wonderful personality and have fond memories of our training days. A few of the Doctors used to get us mixed up for some reason. We missed her at our 50th reunion in September but spoke of her often. I can just imagine what a wonderful Nanny she was. Take care ,I am sure you have wonderful memories. Dale Fleming (Farmer)
