January 8, 2017
Maurene Patricia Lalonde (Nee Fleming), 1944-2017
World Adventurer and Avid Scuba Diver
On January 8th and during her 694th dive, Maurene unexpectedly passed away peacefully during one of her many adventures, this time to the Island of Roatan, Honduras. Born in Edmonton, raised in Calgary and the Okanogan Valley, she called many places home including the UK, Germany, Belgium, Curacao and all across Canada before finally settling in Manotick, Ontario.
She was proud of her three university degrees: a BA (1971) from the University of Calgary, an MA (1993) in International Relations from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and an M.Sc. (1994) in Business Administration from Boston University. Married to retired Maj.-Gen Pierre Lalonde for 51 years, they loved to travel all over the world and explored more than 100 countries together where Maurene engaged in her passion for scuba diving at every opportunity.
The only thing she loved more than adventure, was her family. She was the cherished wife of Pierre Lalonde, adored mother of James (Alison), Coralie (Richard) and Emery (Gabrielle). She was the treasured sister of Shelagh Fleming and loved by numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Maurene’s family and many friends from around the world will truly miss her captivating smile, her engaging laugh and her sincere heart. Sharing her mom’s passion for education, Maurene will be remembered along with her mother, through a bursary to assist mature students at the University of Calgary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes to the Maurene Lalonde and Irma Fleming Bursary may be made by phone (403-220-5854 or Toll free 1-800-972-8632) or by visiting https://netcommunity.ucalgary.ca/LalondeFleming.
