In Celebration of

Marguerite Georgette Smith

November 25, 1921 -  March 25, 2017

Marguerite Smith (née Levesque), beloved wife of James Murray Smith (deceased 22nd of December 1990), and cherished mother of Catherine Smith, died peacefully on the 25th of March 2017, after a series of illnesses over the last eight years.

Marguerite (known as Margot to her family and friends) was a wonderful, gracious and gentle woman. She was a voracious reader of literature and followed politics closely. She was also blessed with excellent judgement on matters big and small.

Margot was born on the 25th of November 1921 into a large French Canadian family in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario. She is survived by her daughter Catherine, her sister Denise (Bruce Gordon) and many nieces and nephews; and predeceased by four of her five sisters (Lucille, Marcelle, Henriette, and Marie-Paule) and by her two brothers (Gaston and Joseph).

Margot spent the war years in Noranda, Québec, and then went on to join her sister Marcelle in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Shortly thereafter, she married Murray, an exploration mining engineer, and together they travelled the globe, living in Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Bolivia, Malaysia, Honduras, and India. Margot made a warm home for her family wherever they travelled.

Upon her return to Canada, Margot cared for Murray, who was by then ill health, and other family members.
Margot was the most wonderful mother and best friend to Catherine, who was the light of her life. Catherine adored Margot and shall miss her profoundly for the rest of her days.

A funeral mass in Margot’s memory will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, the 30th of March 2017, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 95 Somerset Street W., Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 0H3. Interment and reception to follow at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa.
