In Celebration of

Luther Paul Chambers

February 17, 1932 -  September 25, 2017

Passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 25th, 2017; age 85. He was married to his late wife, Mary Chambers for 54 years, and is survived by his daughter, Laura chambers, and his grandson, Jason Chambers.

Luther was born in Berlin Germany in 1932, and emigrated to Canada in 1958 where he worked in coal mines to finance his law degree at the University of Toronto. Luther was a lawyer for the department of justice for over 50 years, and was still an active lawyer at the time of his passing. Moreover, Luther was a loving and devoted father and grandfather for this family.

A private Service will take place.

Luther was already a legend in the Department of Justice when I joined in 1980. He was a tireless advocate for his government clients, thorough and thoroughly professional in everything he did. As a colleague for nearly 20 years and an adversary for another 17, I admired him personally and as a litigation lawyer.

Laura and Jason,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have known Luther for 7 years and it was a privilege working with him. Such a smart man with a very subtle and wry sense of humor - he caught me off guard on more than one occasion. I remember his surprise at the fuss made over 80th birthday. As the organizer for the office celebration, I can tell you that once the word got out, the phone started ringing. I apologize for keeping him out so late as I think we may have usurped a family celebration.
He will be missed.

Luther had a long and successful career with the Department of Justice. He will be missed by his friends and colleagues in the Department, as well as in the client Departments he served. Our thoughts are with Luther's family.

I first met Luther in 1990 (when he told me he was nearing retirement LOL), little did I no that I was going spend the next 20 years working closely with Luther on a variety of court cases, mostly tax avoidance cases. In all the years in the CRA I never met anyone who loved the law or arguing court cases as much as Luther, he found it all exciting and invigorating, and would complain if a judge wanted a break for lunch in the middle of an interesting argument. When not working Luther loved a good meal, especially roast beef at Honest Ed's in Toronto (no vegetables please), with a good beer or wine. Luther was certainly provided me with some of the most interest case experiences during my years in the Canada Revenue Agency. It is good to know he kept doing what he enjoyed right up to the end.

My deepest sympathy to Luther’s family. I have known Luther since I started at the Department of Justice. Not only did we share a love for the law but also for excellent food and wine; dinner at my place when I was working in Vancouver were just perfect. Luther, rest in peace.
