Luis Alfredo BUSTOS Guerrero, aged 88, died at the Ottawa Hospital, Civic Campus, on February 2, 2019, after a long illness. In death, he joins his beloved wife of 62 years, Jacqueline, who predeceased him by less than a month, and his son, Paul-Luis, who died in 2006. He leaves behind a daughter, Marie-Françoise.

Luis was born in Santiago, Chile, and trained as a chemical engineer. He met his wife, a young Frenchwoman who had followed her family to South America after World War II, at the laboratory where they both worked. Soon after their marriage, they decided to move to Canada, where they welcomed two children. Luis began a second career in marketing and travelled extensively in Latin America for his work. The family moved to Mexico in the 1960s, sent there by the company where Luis was employed. Upon their return to Canada, he joined the Public Service, ending his career as a Trade Commissioner at our embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, and our consulate in São Paulo, Brazil.

Luis enjoyed a richly deserved retirement here in Ottawa, indulging his passion for all things electronic. He spent long hours researching topics as varied as the works of Lord Byron and the history of the Haida Nation. He enthusiastically followed world events, reading several newspapers and magazines every day. Although his body failed him, his mind remained sharp and inquisitive to the end; his charm and engaging sense of humour will be remembered by all who knew him.

Marie-Françoise wishes to thank the staff at the Civic Campus for their commitment to making her father’s last days as comfortable as possible. A memorial will be planned in the spring.
