In Celebration of

Judy Hamelin

It is with profound sadness that the family of Judy (Purcell) Hamelin announce her sudden passing on June 8, 2017 at the age 78. Judy was the loving wife of Marcel, the adored mother of Danielle (Andrew Waldron), Christine (Paul Workman) and Marc (Janet Truchon), and the devoted grandma of Nicholas, Caroline, Eric and Beth. The daughter of the late Gillis and late archy Purcell, she is also survived by sisters Patricia (John Smart) and Susan, sister-in-law Barbara Purcell and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Peter and Bob and her sister-in-law Lois Purcell. Judy will also be dearly missed by the Hamelin family, her brothers and sisters-in-law and their families, whom she loved very much.

A Leaside girl, she graduated from University of Toronto (St. Mike’s) in English and philosophy before going on to teacher’s college. For over 30 years, Judy taught English at Ottawa’s Lycée Claudel, where she inspired and befriended countless students who stayed in touch with her over the years. She completed a Master of Arts in English at the University of Ottawa in 1989.

In 1962 she married Marcel, the love of her life, and they began their romantic, bicultural journey that lasted almost 55 joyous years. Always a supportive partner to Marcel in his career as Dean of Arts and then President of the University of Ottawa, she was a vibrant presence at many university functions.

Generous and warm, Judy loved travel, literature and lively conversation. She will be deeply, deeply missed by all. She was a happy woman who felt fortunate and blessed in her friends and family and who truly enjoyed her life.

Visitation will be held at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa on Wednesday, June 14 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held in Beechwood’s Sacred Space on Thursday, June 15 at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Judy and Marcel Hamelin Scholarship Fund (University of Ottawa) or to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute would be appreciated.

My heartfelt condolences to the family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have very fond memories of Mme. Hamelin. I am grateful to have been taught English by this wonderful teacher. She had a remarkable way of communicating her passion for literature. Through her shrewd selection of reading assignments, the analyses that ensued, the questions she had us debate, she taught us about love, life and the world. She also displayed a keen interest in her students and became a true friend to many of us. She will be sorely missed!
