In Celebration of

James William "Bill" Cook

July 18, 1927 -  July 18, 2018

COOK, James William CD
LCol (Retired) - RCAF
1927-2018

James William (Bill) Cook passed peacefully with his family by his side on 18 July 2018, his 91st birthday. He was the son of the late William James and Rachel Cook. Predeceased by his first wife Margaret Christina MacIver (the mother of his children), his wife Joan and brother Robert. Left to mourn are his son William (Bernadette) and grand-children Tracey (Corey) and Billy; son John (Jane), grand-children Daniel (Lauren) and Maggie (both born of Lesley Small) and great-grandchildren Liam and Connor. Also survived by step-daughter Jennifer (Barry) and their children Sara and Taylor. Will be missed by nieces Joanne (Joe) and Deborah (Mack).

Bill was born and grew up in Kirkland Lake, Ontario where he worked in the gold mines to put himself through McMaster University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a supply officer, retiring as a lieutenant-colonel after twenty-five years service. He was most proud of his duty with the United Nations Emergency Force during Canada’s first peacekeeping mission, and his role as a member of the directing staff at the Canadian Forces College. He continued serving his country after retirement from the military as a director with Public Works and Government Services Canada for ten years.

After many years as an avid curler, he switched to golf, chasing ever-elusive pars, and stayed fit and independent until late in life.

He will be remembered for a strong work ethic, a keen sense of humour and a willingness to help others, always ready to lend a sympathetic ear and offer sage advice.

Many thanks to the staff at Beacon Heights Retirement Residence and the Montfort Hospital for their care and compassion.

Friends and family are invited to pay respects and visit the Hall of Colours of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave. Ottawa on Friday July 27, 2018 after 10 a.m. Memorial Service will be held in the Sacred Space at 11 a.m. followed by interment and reception. In lieu of flowers, the family is encouraging donations be made in memory of Bill to the charity of your choice.

In our family Bill was known as “Uncle Bill” a kind and wonderful man with an incredible sense of humor and understanding of people in general. We enjoyed many good times with him including Christmas spent in Ste. Adele and a wonderful tour of Cape Cod with a running commentary that still puts a smile on my face today. He loved his family and was very proud of them.
We extend our deepest condolences and will treasure of memories of such a wonderful man.

My deepest condolences to Bill, Jennifer and family. I got the chance to help Bill when he sold the house. Such a happy helpful man with great stories. I enjoyed the few meals we shared together with Jennifer and just sitting back and listening to his memories. I will always be greatful for the chance to get a sneak peak into his life and the chance to meet his family. Our thoughts are with you. Michele and Lars
