In Celebration of

Indu Mehta

June 26, 1934 -  April 10, 2018

Indu's journey began in Rangoon, Burma, as the fifth of nine children. Her family escaped to Bombay in 1942 during the Japanese invasion. In 1945, she met Anil, who lived in the same building complex. They went steady from 1949 to 1958, and their love affair continued by letters from 1953 to 1956 when Anil was working in South Africa. They were married on March 28, 1958, and emigrated to Canada in 1960.

In Canada, Indu worked first as a special education teacher and later as Vice President of National Printers. She was also active in the Indian community, co-founding the India-Canada Association, the Mukul Hindi School, and the Gujarati Cultural Association, of which she was President for two years.

She was a gentle soul who possessed exemplary organization skills, a flair for entertaining, and deep compassion for her friends. But above all, her greatest joy was her family, and she will be immensely missed by Anil after their seventy years together; by Priti (Divyesh), Sandeep (Radhika), and Nikesh (Jennifer); by grandchildren Nihar, Manali, Mirai, Anika, Arjun, Niam, and Kai; by siblings Hathisinghbhai, Dinesh, Tarunika, Mrudu, and Surbhi; and by her extended family.

All are invited to the visitation at Beechwood Cemetery (280 Beechwood Ave, Ottawa) from 9 - 11 AM this Saturday, with a funeral service to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Jindal Kidney Care Centre at The Ottawa Hospital.

Indu auntie had a profound impact on my life as not only was she the mother of one of my closest friends (Nikesh) but she was also a teacher and leader of the community. From her I learned the value of leadership and importance of family. She will be dearly missed but her impact always felt and never forgotten.

Our deep and sincere love,
Raj, Betti, Rohan and Kamren

We fondly remember our trip to Montreal and Ottawa. We spent the day with Aunty and Uncle. Their enthusiasm and warmth was so endearing. Aunty insisted on preparing home cooked meal for us. It was so interesting to hear about their life journey. Aunty was an amazingly warm person.
Our prayers are with the family.
