In Celebration of

Gerd Horst Deckelmann

June 30, 1938 -  February 28, 2017

Against the odds, Gerd survived 9 years with Melanoma. He passed peacefully at the age of 78 on February 28th, 2017. Born in Schwarzenbach am Wald, Bavaria, Germany, Gerd immigrated to Canada at the age of 20 landing at Pier 21 where his legacy is commemorated through a photographic display . He leaves his wife Lynda (Ferguson), daughters: Heidi and Julie, grandchildren: Cooper and Quinn, his siblings: Traudl (Helmut), Rudi, Renate (Pat), Ottmar, his godson Guido, many nieces and nephews in Germany, Canada and USA and countless dear friends around the world. Gerd's desire to become a pilot was fulfilled in Toronto in the early 60's when he received his private pilot's licence. Plans changed when he was offered a job with Consumers Gas. Gerd retired after 35 years from Consumers Gas/Enbridge where he established numerous lifelong friendships. Everyone who knew him knew of his passion for downhill skiing and his unwavering commitment to encouraging people to take up the sport. A 50 year member of the CSIA and a Level 3 instructor, he remained committed to teaching, directing and skiing at Edelweiss Valley. In his younger years , Gerd was involved in both playing and coaching soccer in Germany and in Canada . Friends and Family are invited to visit at Beechwood, Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa from 6 – 8pm Tuesday, March 7. Visitation will resume on Wednesday, March 8, at 2 o’clock, until time of Funeral Service in Beechwood’s Sacred Space at 3 o’clock. In keeping with his wishes a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers and for those wishing , donations can be made in his memory to the Melanoma Network of Canada (www.melanomanetwork.ca). Special thanks to Dr Sandra Froeschl and the staff of 5 East at the Ottawa Hospital - General Campus. EIN PROSIT!
