In Celebration of

Dr. Howard Blackwood

There is another bright star shining in heaven. Howard Anthony Francis “Peter” Blackwood, born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Allan and Cecily (Francis) Blackwood, has gone home to his heavenly Father. Under the care of the medical team at the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus), and surrounded and comforted by his loving family, he slipped away quietly, unexpectedly, and on his own terms, on February 16, 2016. Howard is survived by the love of his life, Dorothy Hutt; Sister, Fabia (Blackwood) Davis, Lloyd Davis, and their children Locksley, Leighton and Lisa; Daughter, Lyndsey, and her daughters, Naomi and Aleyah.

Howard was blessed with a loving and close-knit family. He adored his sister, Fabia, and she adored him. He was strongly influenced by his father’s work ethic, professionalism, self-control, and charitable nature. It was his mother, Cecily, who took a stand to ensure that Howard would pursue his dreams to become a dentist, and made the arrangements for Howard to study in the U.S. After his studies at Calabar High School (Kingston, Jamaica), he attended Howard University and then attended Western University, bringing him North.

Ottawa became home and where Howard practiced dentistry in Westboro for over 45 years, up until seven months ago. He took great pride in carrying out his responsibilities as a dentist, with the compassion and integrity he believed were appropriate to this calling. He specialized in never turning away patients who were in pain, and making people smile. He valued this quote from William Dean Howells: “The conqueror is regarded with awe; the wise man commands our respect; but it is only the benevolent man that wins our affection.” Howard consistently went out of his way to care for his patients, and he modeled unfailing kindness and loyalty to his staff, patients, colleagues, and the community at large. He was a role model to many.

He was resolute in whatever he undertook, committed to excellence in every pursuit and encouraged these values in those he loved. His greatness was unpretentious and boundless. We will miss this selfless, stylish, impeccable man whom we called Peter. “When a great ship is in harbour and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for.” - Clarrisa Pinkola Estes. May Peter’s legacy continue to guide and inspire us with the example he set of greatness: excellence, integrity and humility.

In lieu of flowers, Howard’s (Peter) family would appreciate a charitable contribution in Howard’s name to the CHEO foundation.

Family and Friends are to visit at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue (East of Vanier Parkway), Friday, February 26, 2016 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2016, at Christ Church Cathedral, 414 Sparks Street, Ottawa, K1R 0B2. I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Blackwood's passing. The dental office called last night with the sad news.
Dr. Blackwood was my dentist for 0ver 35 years and in that time he was the most caring, compassionate, generous and gentle man. When he knew that I could not pay the full cost of appliances for myself and my son, he insisted that we just pay the wholesale price and not worry about his profit margin.
He knew too, that I was terrified of dentists and especially of needles, but he was so careful that I never felt any pain.
May God bless his family and may He look upon favour on his newest Heavenly angel.
My deepest sympathies to family and close friends.

I still remember when he first started the practice on Holland. It was on the second floor of the building next door. With only one chair and him doing the teeth cleaning. Thanks for all the years service.

My wife and I have been patients of Dr. Blackwood for over 40 and 30 years respectively. He subsequently became the dentist to our 2 sons; one of whom was a little timid at first to show the doctor his teeth. Dr Blackwood exercised patience and interest in dealing with them and was able to eventually coax the biggest open mouth for exam at the next visit. Needless to say I'm sure the toy chest helped a great deal. He always took the time to see how everyone was doing and showed great interest in the boys sporting activity and providing generous support. He will be missed. Our thoughts go out to his family.

My condolences to the family. Having been a patient of Dr. Blackwood's from the age of 15, to 56 years old, and having my parents and as well my three children cared for by Dr. Blackwood, I can only think of three mighty words by the legendary singer Tina Turner that would describe "Peters" all around persona, SIMPLY THE BEST!

R.I.P. Dr. Blackwood.

My condolences Dorothy, to you and your family. I am still in shock at the passing of your husband, so I can only imagine the grief and sadness you and your family are going through. It was only this past Monday, Feb 13th, I sent Dr Blackwood a card of thanks to, via Westboro Family Dentistry. I hope they will pass it on to you, and how I wish he would have been able to read it, as I told him how much he meant to me as a dentist, and he was the best Dentist in Ottawa!!!
I have been one of the people Dr. Blackwood has provided the highest professional standard of care to over these 34 years. He was a perfectionist when it came to the care he gave to me, and I felt like, and knew, I had the best dentist in Ottawa. Dr. Blackwood also knew and provided care to all our family,
It is my husband's Aunt Colleen Fogarty, owner of STUDIO COLLEEN, who Howard purchased so may of the pictures that hang on the wall at his practice from,
Every 4 to 6 months, when I came in, he was genuinely interested to know how my children and husband were doing.
Yes, he was compassionate, in every way. He was sensitive to my needs, being one of those "chicken patients". One one occasion I needed a break in the middle of a procedure, and he touched my shoulder and reassured me, giving me that little break to release my anxiety. He only needed to whisper to Betty, his right hand dental assistant, and what a great team he had working beside him,and beside me: Eva, Stacy, and Tamar.
What a stylish dresser he was too. When he first started wearing a dress shirt at work, I personally commented to him how " Sharp" he looked, and from then, on it seemed, he wore nothing but the sharpest, classiest clothing, never going back to the medical coats.
Oh How I miss Him and share in just a drop of your loss. What a Great Legacy he leaves this earth with though!
May these memories of your cherished Peter, help to sooth your tears. I am sure you are so proud of your husband for who he was.
I too believe he would go to Heaven, as he was a servant, showing and giving so much love, totally selfless, devoted to his practice, his clients, to me. It was my honour to know your husband to this degree. Joanne Williamson
