Doris Harper

Peacefully in her 97th year on Saturday January 27, 2018 at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre. Doris was the beloved wife of the late John (Jack) and the treasured mother of Judith, David (Anna), John (the late Nancy) and Deanna Mahood (Paul). Their Nanny’s memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren, Alex Campbell (Jackie), Cheryl Campbell (Derek), Nick Harper (Ivania), Dan Harper, Jeff Mahood (Andrea), Greg Mahood (Leigh), Jennifer Charles (Matt), her great-grandchildren Adrienne, Josh, Emily, KaiLin , Desmond, Nate, Peter, Molly, Connor and Abigail. Predeceased by her parents Trevor and Gertrude Cale of Lethbridge, AB. Also predeceased by her brothers Art, Lloyd and Glynn, and her sister Olive. Doris will also be remembered with love by many nieces and nephews.
Born at Trostrey, near Usk, Monmouthshire, Wales, Doris grew up in Weyburn Saskatchewan, joined the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS) in 1942 and served in Galt, Toronto, Halifax, St. John’s and Sydney. She married Jack in Halifax on board HMCS Warrior in 1946 and happily moved with him as the navy decided for the next 22 years, raising their children in Victoria, Sorel, Dartmouth and Ottawa. She worked in the Registrar’s Office of Carleton University from 1970 to 1985, and travelled extensively with Jack in retirement until his death in 2002. In recent years, she lived in Park Place, Richmond Road and Redwoods Retirement Residence, Draper Avenue in Ottawa.
Family will receive relatives and friends in the Hall of Colours, Beechwood National Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave. (east of Vanier Parkway) on Monday February 5, 2018 from 10 a.m. Funeral service in the Sacred Space at 11 a.m. Interment in the National Military Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions to the Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre Foundation, 1750 Russell Road, Ottawa, ON, K1G 5Z6, would be gratefully appreciated. The family thanks the staff of Rideau 2 south and Gatineau 1 North for their care and support.
