Claude Roberts Bugslag
1935-2017
Our beloved husband, father and grandfather slipped away quietly from us on March 21.
Predeceased by his parents Peter and Myrtle Bugslag, his 2 brothers Alvin and Vernon and a baby sister Doreen. He leaves his wife and best friend of many years Sheila, his children Colleen, Trevor and Jeanine (Anderson) son-in-law Alex, precious granddaughter Sophie and sister-in-law Audrey Farnden.
He leaves many cousins, nephews and nieces in Victoria and other parts of B.C.
Claude was born and educated in Victoria B.C. where his father had a construction company. All the boys were taught the correct building techniques and Claude continued to design and build with wood throughout his life. He enjoyed many types of music, painting, sculpture and gardening. He was an eclectic reader and retained knowledge on many topics. He volunteered over 10 years in the archives at the Museum of History. He walked many miles throughout his lifetime.
Claude was a family man, his wife and family always came first, he was there to listen to a concern or give a hug.
He decided to continue his studies when the children were young and received a BSc in Biology from the University of Victoria. He accepted a position in Fort St. John where he taught woodworking and drafting as well as some math and science. He returned to graduate school in Vancouver and received his MSc in Community and Regional Planning in 1968. His thesis was on using ecology as a basis for land use planning. We moved to Toronto where he worked for the provincial government as senior planner in municipal affairs, responsible for half of the greater Toronto area. We moved to Ottawa in 1974 to work for Parks Canada and later transferred to the department of Indian and Northern affairs. He retired in 1998.
Special thanks to Dr. Auer and Jenny, Dr. Bazile, Janet and Ali at Neurologic Physiotherapy and Goldsmith Medical Transport. We couldn’t have done it without you. We also wish to give our sincere thanks to the General, Civic and Riverside campuses of the Ottawa Hospital and Elisabeth Bruyere Hospital, CCAC, St. Elizabeth, Visiting Homemakers Association, Carefor, Dr. Chan, Dr. Oake, Dr. Mestre, Dr. Sitwell, Dr. Rock and Dr. Weston; we have always appreciated the caring support from our friends and neighbours.
we ain't got a barrel of money
Maybe we're ragged and funny
But we'll travel along singing a song
Side by side.
Don't know what's coming tomorrow
Maybe it's trouble and sorrow
But we'll travel the road sharin' our load
Side by side.
Through all kind of weather
What if the sky should fall
As long as we're together
It doesn't matter at all.
When they've all had their quarrels and parted
We'll be the same as we started
Just to travel along singing a song
Side by side- Harry Woods
Please join us to celebrate Claude’s life on Monday, April 10th at 2 p.m. at Rideau Park United Church. Cremation, interred at Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.
