C. Peter Johns

JOHNS, Christopher Peter
Peter’s last beautiful day was March 30, 2016 at the Ottawa General Hospital with his family at his side. He was overtaken by sarcoma, despite aggressive treatment and his valiant efforts to keep the cancer at bay. His courage and positive attitude has led us all through the months he has been treated for sarcoma. He was 50 years old.
Peter was the loving husband and best friend to Allison, cherished Dad to Adam, Kelly and Steven. He was the much-loved son of Barbara and Ernie Johns and beloved son-in-law of Bev and the late Art Wade. Awesome brother to Sue and Greg Tulloch, their children Matthew, Scott and Tim, Lynda and Greg Clarke and their children Robert, Amy and Christopher, respected brother-in-law of Meg and Glenn Seal and their children Kaiti (Nish), Tori (Erik), and AJ, Casey Wade and Alexandra and children Courtney (Josh), Remy and Jac.
Sports were a continuous part of Peter’s life, first as a recognized athlete in high school and then as a coach. He continued to play hockey and baseball as an adult. He co-founded the Nepean Knights baseball club in 1993 that is still in existence. His children and many others benefited from his sports experience when he coached them in baseball, soccer, Nepean Raiders and Nepean Wildcats hockey. Peter is a mechanical engineering graduate from Carleton University. He began his career at Flakt/ABB and Honeywell. Once he found his comfort in a sales role, he was able to sell his own skills and move to the high tech field, working at Exocom, Allstream and finally Oracle where he was Regional Vice President Technology Sales.
Peter would tell you he learned that what he was good at was making people better. He humbly thought his contribution was to support people and enable them to improve and grow, hoping to achieve their best. During his illness he was grateful to hear from hockey players, colleagues, team mates and friends, of the value of his input and insight. He valued doing the right thing, being a good person, and appreciated his upbringing as the foundation for these values. A keen sense of humour and kindness made the lessons he taught, easier to learn.
The true measure of a person is not how they behave in easy times, but how they respond to a challenge. And Peter faced sarcoma as a challenge. He never complained. He embraced each day and the chance to enjoy all it offered. His kindness, caring, positive nature and sense of humour leave us with warm memories and gratitude for having him be a part of our lives. Peter and his family send heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus and the Ottawa Cancer Centre for the compassionate, quality care he received.
Friends will be received at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, (280, Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa), on Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Service in Beechwood’s Sacred Space at 11:00 a.m. For those who wish to make a donation in Peter’s memory, please consider donating to The Ottawa Hospital Sarcoma Program, through the Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
