It is with heavy heart that the family announce the passing of a much loved husband, father and grandfather. Doug left with love and affection on March 15, 2016 at the age of 92. He was born in 1923 in Vancouver, B.C., of James and Mary Arthur; he is survived by his sister Audrey, nephew Jimmy and nieces Laurie and Jean in Vancouver. Douglas is lovingly remember by his wife and best friend Jeannine, sons David, Mark and daughter Elaine (Dan Adams). Stepsons John (Isabelle) Stephan (Karen) and Morgan (deceased). Proud grandfather of Graydon, Cole, Shelby, Matthew, Katie, Jonathan, Tea, Paige, Alexandre, Matthew, Jason, Lindsay and Shayne. From High School Douglas joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII (1942-45) and served overseas as a Flying Officer Bombardier with 426 Thunderbird Squadron. Douglas was educated at the Universities of British Columbia, Washington (Seattle) and Carleton University. He joined the Federal Public Service serving in a number of departments including Finance; Industry and Industry, Trade Commerce. In 1950 he joined the Governor General's Footguards as a Lieutenant and served as Lieutenant Colonel Commanding (1960-1964). In 1996 he was appointed Honourary Lieutenant Colonel of the Regiment (1996-2002). Doug was a Public School Trustee in Nepean for a number of years and was the founding Chairman of the Carleton Board of Education. He also served as President of the Ottawa Valley Autistic Homes and as a volunteer with The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre. He was a former member of the Rideau Tennis Club and the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Beechwood, Funeral, Cemetery and Cremation Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa, with interment to follow in the National Military Cemetery. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health.
