Burpee Mason

Burpee was born in Tangier, Nova Scotia and passed away peacefully at Perley Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre, in the presence of his family, on June 17, 2018, one week short of his 97th birthday. Burpee is survived by his loving daughter Dianne Leclerc (Marcel), grandson Randy (Lin) Showalter & great granddaughter Tara Showalter. He will be dearly missed by his brother-in-law Arthur MacKenzie (Inez), sister-in-law Gladys Mason, nieces & nephews & many dear friends.
He is predeceased by his wife Velda (nee MacKenzie), parents Stanley & Elizabeth (nee Murphy) as well as siblings, Hildred (Fred and Albert) Aitkens-Way, Thelma (Ernie) Sacco, Kathleen (Doug) MacDonald, Frank (Effie), Stanley (Hortense), Lionel (Gladys), Pearl (Fred) Cool, Lavinia (Jim) Clattenburg.
Burpee was an army veteran who served 5 years overseas during WW II. On returning home, after the war, Burpee joined the public service & married his best friend’s sister, Velda, with whom he celebrated 69 years of happy marriage. He retired from Transport Canada - meteorology, after 30 years of service.
Burpee was an exceptionally kind & generous person who, to quote from the Perley Staff, “Always treated people like human beings & never got upset”.
A special thanks to those family & friends who gave Burpee much pleasure, especially those card game enthusiasts; to the fantastic staff at Perley Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre who brought him such joy & comfort in his final years. We miss you Burpee, more than you can imagine.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life that will take place on Wednesday, July 4th, 2018 at the Perley Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre (1750 Russell Road, Ottawa, ON), the Ottawa Building, 2nd floor activity room from 2-4pm. Words of Remembrance will begin at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Perley Rideau Veteran’s Health Center in Burpee’s memory.
Friends and family are welcome to attend a military service and interment at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa in the spring of 2019. Details to be announced at a later date.
