In Celebration of

Barry Colby

In Loving Memory . . .

Barry Melvin Colby
June 19, 1936 –June 7, 2018
With sadness we mourn the loss of our beloved father after a full and adventurous life. Survived by his four adult children Lisa (Eric Kaufmanis), Karen (the late Paul Stothart), Grant (Claudette) and Krista (Matthew Wheatley); his nine grandchildren, Sophie, Sarah, Alexander, Juliana, Samantha, Julia, Charlotte, Fiona and Lauren; his brothers William (Patricia)and Michael; his brothers in law Charles Parent (Beverly), Roland Parent (Janet), sister in law Claire Denis (Jean) and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased in death by his adored wife of 58 years, Adele; his parents Elsie May and William Colby; and his sister Barbara (Ronald) Hawes. May Barry and Adele together rest in peace.

Dad passed away from heart failure just a few days before his 82nd birthday and only 9 weeks after Mum died. We like this picture taken last summer when he was still strong and fit. A rugged individualist who defied easy description, Dad was a quiet thinker and liked to enjoy the outdoors, good dinner conversation, books and family. He began as a brilliant young software developer with IBM in the 1960's and 70's; spent a few years at CMHC and many more with Data Kinetics. He wrote computer programs until well into his 70s. He read widely and knew more about history than any person we ever knew. His intellectual curiosity did not take away from his love of the outdoors and capacity for hard physical work. An avid canoeist, camper, hiker and gardener he was a natural builder and landscaper and built many of our homes over the years. He grew up on a farm, and understood Canada's natural world intimately. As eccentric as they come, quiet, kind, clever and steadfast, he was a wonderful father and showed us how to make our way in the world. We will miss you terribly Dad.

Friends are invited to pay respects on Saturday October 20, 2018, at the Sacred Space of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave. after 9 a.m. Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. followed by interment and reception.

I was saddened to learn of the loss of this great man, who was for many years a neighbour in Tichborne, Ontario. I am thankful to have shared in his life, and that of his beloved Adele. May they rest in peace. Susan and I offer our deepest sympathies to the family at this difficult time.

I am so very saddened and shocked to learn of Barry's passing. I know he will be welcomed by Adele but it will be very difficult to drive by their home without turning up their long drive.

Daniel Hawes We often forget that the real pillars of society are not sports heroes, political leaders or the "famous". Mostly, they are those that lead by example every day with a commitment to hard work, intellectual curiosity, creativity, love and support for those around them. Barry was even more than a pillar, he was a cornerstone upon which an incredible family was built. His shoulders were wide and he quietly and confidently influenced those around him to be better. I was one of the fortunate. While we might disagree on this point :-) I believe he is in a better place now. God bless you Barry Colby!

Barry was one of the finest people I’ve ever known. A dear friend. I enjoyed all the time I spent with him.
Condolences to the family, Greg
